So here we are, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and suddenly there are openings for head coaches at some of the most prestigious football schools in the country.
Nebraska, Texas A&M, Michigan, Ole Miss (?).... well, you know what I mean. It's likely that as the dominoes fall, there will be more jobs available. LSU?, Auburn? Baylor and SMU will be hiring as well.
And it appears that the reason many of the current coaches didn't work out was because they just weren't a good fit to begin with. Dennis Franchione was the John Mackovic of A&M. He was never going to fit in. The Aggies want a good-ole boy "Ball Coach" that can dine with the big money Ags and eat barbecue and spit in a cup with the coaches and fans at Anywhere in West Texas High School.
Nebraska had their head coach on the staff when they fired Frank Solich. Bo Pelini. They even let him finish out Solich's season as the interim coach. But they went for Bill Callahan, a West Coast offense snob who could never relate to the people of the Corn. Pelini was their kind of guy, a good fit. and now Governor Osborne will have the chance to try to make it right and wipe this NFL disaster from the memory banks.
It's ridiculous to think that LSU's fans would never open their arms to Les Miles, who has only won 10 or more games in all three of his seasons. It proves that you never want to be the guy who follows a legend (which Nick Saban will always be in Louisiana because he was able to bring that much longed-for national championships.) You reckon the people at Michigan will appreciate Miles any more if he wins 10 games per season? (probably not, if he doesn't beat Ohio St.)
Winning is VERY important, but apparently, even that is not enough these days. You have to earn the love and affection of the fan base at the same time. Just wait, Nick. You'll see what Bama nation will do to you if you don't hurry up and beat Auburn, soon. Bill Curry won enough games, and they hated him. Idiots.
But then again, there are some people that will never be satisfied, no matter what.
Happy hunting, A.D.'s.
